What if you lived in a world where you couldn't tell the difference between man and machine, a world in which murder is acceptable as long as it’s a scrap of nuts and bolts well that's reality in the world of Do Androids dream of electric sheep by Writer and Philip K Dick, also the inspiration for the critically acclaimed 1982 cult classic Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford, published 1968 set in a post apocalyptic 2021. The novel revolves around the main protagonist Rick Deckard who’s main occupation is “retiring” or killing fugitive androids in other words he’s a bounty hunter. He works in a nuclear dust filled San Francisco devoid of life due to a global nuclear war all that remains are humans not wealthy or healthy enough to escape to mars and androids. Throughout the novel Rick Deckard will have to confront situations that will break him physically and punish him mentally this journey shapes him and forces him to what he becomes in the end.
The narrative consists of rich language, deep and complex topics for example Deckard constantly questions and asks himself is it all real? Are we all just part of a simulation? Do Androids dream of electric sheep dives deep in philosophical subject but also keeps a perfect balance of fast paced action and emotional value. The vast and detailed descriptions of Philip K Dick’s altered setting of a futuristic San Francisco really consumes the reader’s imagination and immerses them in this place as if they were really there. Empathy is the main theme of the novel and it really shows in each and every character especially the Androids. The Androids find their empathetic abilities with each other just as humans find the ability to be empathetic in a collective group but are also capable of losing empathy. At times the Androids seem more human than the humans themselves
I’d recommend this book to any reader that likes literature that involves philosophical subjects and gives the mind various questions about one selves existence. I’d also recommend it to any reader who enjoys the Science Fiction and dystopian society type of genre and is looking for a great adventure. Do Androids dream of electric sheep by Philip K Dick is considered one of the greatest science fiction stories ever told and after you read it you’ll know exactly why.
