"The Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin
Has the complexion of your own skin ever been a problem? A problem that society can’t handle; that you are looked at, and treated differently for.
James Baldwin was one of those boy’s that wasn't recognized for his intelligence or who he was. To society man of color were nothing, but a black boy's that cause trouble. The way he was raised came with a constant reminder from his parents that he is a “black boy”, and not to dream too big which originally would mean back in the days don’t dream at all. At that time racism was a huge factor in the United States. Black boys were raised to hide from the cops before they even knew how to read in my opinion.
He spoke about how the world was for the white, and blacks are just living in it meaning that whites are superior to blacks an example of this is " to act is to be committed, and to be committed is to be in danger. In this case the danger, in the mind of most white Americans, is the loss of their identity" (294). I do agree with this statement because of the message that it sends. If you feel like that’s something you could be interested in--figuring out how the world James Baldwin lived was a white man's world--this book is a book for you.
I enjoyed reading this book. It speaks of the real-life situations that people went through and unfortunately might still go through nowadays. This book is a reminder of how several humans are from both the good and the bad side. What I found inspiring about this book is that the author James Baldwin was able to make his bad experience a story by not letting it break him. Therefore, he made a career out of it.
